NHS girls soccer battles to 1-1 draw at Wheat Ridge

The Niwot High School girls soccer team was forced to settle for its first draw of the season on Tuesday, March 11, finishing in a 1-1 tie with host Wheat Ridge High School in a competitive non-conference matchup.

The Cougars, looking to rebound after dropping their season opener, moved to 0-1-1 overall with the result.

In a tightly contested first half, the Farmers struck first, taking an early lead on their home turf. Niwot responded quickly as junior midfielder Diya Mehta equalized the score with a clinical finish, converting a perfectly placed cross from sophomore Brynn Schlarb.

"Mariah Fletemeyer and Larkyn Young split halves in goal and did an excellent job managing the game from the back," said Niwot Head Coach Stephen Dimit.

The second half saw both teams generate quality scoring opportunities, but strong defensive play and solid goalkeeping prevented either side from finding a winner. Both squads threatened to break the deadlock multiple times, but 1-1 remained the final score as the referee blew the final whistle.

Niwot will have an extended break before returning to action, hosting Erie on Thursday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. The Cougars will look to use the practice time to build on their defensive performance while sharpening their attack as they continue their non-conference schedule.
