Niwot High School choirs traveled to Orlando, Florida, on Mar. 13 to compete at Festival Disney, an all Disney-produced music competition among middle and high school students across the United States.
A mix of Niwot choir members came together to create the unique choir called the Niwot High School Disney Choir. Members of the Treble Choir, Tenor/Bass Choir, Sedalia, Chamber Singers, and Evenstar joined together to form a new and exciting group to compete alongside one another.
The group only had a limited number of rehearsals together to prepare. Nonetheless, Choir Director Laura Walters helped the group members to connect and work as a team to refine their music in a short amount of time.
Walters, who has been the Choir Director at Niwot since 2016, has been planning this trip for a year to ensure that everything went smoothly for students and staff. Her hard work paid off. Students, staff and Walters all had a fun and memorable trip.
Receiving an overall "Excellent" score, Niwot did not fail to impress the judges and audience. Performing a diverse trio of songs, the group was able to display a variety of musical talent.
Featuring "Heartbeat" arranged by Kyle Pederson, "Swingin' with the Saints" arranged by Mark Hayes, and "Closer to the Flame" written and arranged by Susan Boersma & David Lantz III, each of the choir's songs told a different story.
"Heartbeat" brought inspiration, "Swingin' with the Saints" brought energy, and "Closer to the Flame" told a story full of emotion.
The Niwot High School Disney Choir brought home a large "Festival Disney" trophy and each student received a ribbon medal.
Not only did the students get the chance to compete against other vocal groups, they also got the opportunity to spend time in each park at Disney World over the five days they spent travelling, including EPCOT, Disney Springs, Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, and Animal Kingdom.
Spending the days exploring the parks was exciting for both students and chaperones. From riding "Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind" at Epcot to "The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror" at Hollywood Studios, each day was packed with exhilarating rides, fun food, and adventure.
This experience will remain with the students for life, and the magic of Disney will forever linger with the Niwot Choir program.
