Niwot is no stranger to businesses that aim to help with many forms of personal care. As of November, 2024, Biscochito HomeCare has been operating in Boulder County and its surrounding areas.
Biscochito, named after the state cookie of New Mexico where the non-profit company originated, is an at-home service organization, pairing caregivers with individuals who may need different levels of support. A biscochito is a sweet, shortbread cookie. One of the organization's favorite taglines is "live life sweetly" and it embraces the cookie symbolism.
Biscochito provides varying levels of "transitional care" for those who have recently undergone a surgery. "Care on call" will bring caregivers into the home a few times a week or month for visits and help tackle tasks that need to be done. "Dementia support" and "end of life" care provides resources for those dealing with grief, and their standard service of "in home care" offering daily support and companionship.
As a non-profit organization, a majority of the organization's revenues goes directly to the caregivers as they are employees, and not contract workers. Biscochito also pays for 100% of their employee's health care premiums.
Monthly support groups are also held for caregivers. Part of the support group is to provide an abundance of education around dementia, dealing with grief, and how to connect with clients. "We refer to our client's family as their 'near and dear,'" said Ashley Bounds, a long-time Niwot resident and Biscochito's Boulder Support Coordinator.
The "Circle of Love" is the basis and foundation of the organization. It is a layered approach to creating life full of depth, beauty, and richness.
Bounds, who has been involved with the organization since June 2024, said having open communication with those close to their clients is vital because caregivers also need support. "We want our clients to live their best possible lives at whatever stage of life they are in," she said.
Bounds said Biscochito's non-hierarchical structure empowers caregivers to respond directly to client needs, creating stronger bonds and more personalized care. By working in self-directed teams rather than under layers of management, caregivers develop a deeper sense of ownership and investment in their clients' well being, resulting in higher quality care and greater continuity of service.

"It has been quite a learning curve," added Bounds, "and one that I am grateful for."
