The $165 million CO 119 Safety, Mobility & Bikeway Project, aimed at enhancing safety, mobility, and adding a bikeway between Longmont and Boulder, has progressed to Niwot.
The stretch of Niwot Road between the northbound and southbound lanes of CO 119, which are separated by a grassland area referred to as "the median" in transportation terminology, is scheduled to close from Monday, April 7, to Wednesday, April 16. The closure will enable crews to construct the bikeway underpass at Niwot Road, allowing a safe passage for bicyclists as they cross Niwot Road where it intersects with CO 119.
East and westbound travelers wanting to cross CO 119 along Niwot Road will need to make the following detours:
Eastbound travelers seeking to cross CO 119 will need to detour right onto southbound CO 119, then turn left and head east onto Colorado Highway 52, then turn left onto 79th Street, heading north, to intersect with Niwot Road. This detour is approximately 3.32 miles.
Westbound travelers seeking to cross CO 119 will need to detour right onto northbound CO 119, turn left, and head west onto Airport Road, then turn left onto southbound CO 119 and turn right heading west on Niwot Road. This detour is approximately 4.22 miles.
Gunbarrel motorists are experiencing travel delays due to a lane closure at the intersection of Jay Road and CO 119. CDOT's website states the project team is aware of the delays and continues to monitor the intersection closely. The Jay Road intersection will remain in this configuration through late spring, and the project team advises that travelers take alternate routes during this closure.
63rd Street from Lookout Road to Jay Road continues to undergo construction with the left turn onto Lookout Road closed.
The entire project is scheduled to be constructed from fall 2023 through spring 2027. CO 119, holds the second-highest crash corridor for bicyclists in Boulder County. From 2015 through 2019, there were 17 bicycle crashes, resulting in five severe injuries and one fatality, and since the end of 2019, there have been multiple additional fatalities.
