Cougars set national marks at Oregon Relays

Several of Niwot High School's top track and field athletes took to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, over the weekend to compete in one of the nation's premier high school meets. The Oregon Relays, held Friday and Saturday, April 4-5, brought together elite competition from across the country, and the Cougars delivered strong performances across the board.

Sophomore Quinn Sullivan made his name known on the national stage. He placed third in the 1500-meter with a time of 3:55.02, which ranks him seventh in the nation. He followed that with a fourth-place finish in the 1600, clocking in at 4:09.76. That time now puts Sullivan at the top of Colorado's 1600-meter leaderboard and 21st in the U.S.

In the same distance events, junior Hunter Robbie also impressed. He ran a 4:15.74 in the 1600-meter, which was good for 13th place and fourth-best in Colorado. Senior Cole Mazurana rounded out Niwot's presence in the event, running a 4:26.69. Both Robbie and Mazurana also competed in the 1500-meter race.

The girls distance group also dominated. Junior Addison Ritzenhein placed fourth in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:30.96, currently the third-fastest time in the country. She backed it up with a 4:49.13 in the 1600-meter, which is the fastest time in Colorado this season and 16th nationally.

Junior Anna Prok had a strong showing as well, finishing sixth in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:36.29 and sixth again in the 1600-meter at 4:52.84. Her 1500-meter finish now ranks 10th in the nation, and her 1600-meter time puts her third in Colorado and 32nd in the U.S.

Sophomore Elise Hagen was not far behind. She placed ninth in both the 1500-meter (4:37.76) and the 1600-meter (4:55.32), performances that now rank her 14th in

Colorado and 60th nationally. She also holds the fifth-fastest 1600-meter time in Colorado so far this season.

Junior Avalon Beltran ran 10:13.26 in the 3,000-meter to place 13th, good for 23rd in the U.S, and returned for the 3200-meter, where she ran 10:47.85, now ranked seventh in Colorado.

Sophomore Elsza Bergen placed 21st in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:47.32 and ran 2:21.60 in the 800-meter. Her 5:05.12 in the 1600-meter is currently ranked No. 15 in Colorado.

In the sprints, junior Joshua Archuleta broke the 50-second barrier in the boys 400-meter, clocking in at 49.95 to place 14th. That time ranks him 11th in the state. Meanwhile, junior Kingston Staton had a season-best 40.3 in the 300-meter hurdles, now seventh in Colorado.

Archuleta, Bernstein, Staton and senior Weston Domich made up Niwot's 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. The Cougars finished ninth in the 4x200 (1:32.24) and 14th in the 4x400 (3:28.20), which now stands as the fastest 4x4 time in the state so far this season.

Domich also showed up in the field events, placing 12th in the long jump (6.45 meters) and eighth in the triple jump (12.92 meters). Niwot's distance medley relay team, consisting of Robbie, Archuleta, Mazurana, and Sullivan, ran 10:15.15 to place sixth overall.
