ROAD CLOSURES AND IMPACTS
At press time, the road closures and impacts for the week, 4/13/25–4/19/25, had yet to be posted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) on the CDOT website or in their emailed newsletter.
Niwot residents saw Niwot Road at the intersection with CO 119 closed to traffic on Saturday, April 12. It will close again beginning April 28 at 9 p.m. and continuing through May 7 at 5 a.m.
If a commuter approaches this intersection on the east side of CO 119 during the time of this closure, there will be no possible way to access the highway into Boulder by turning left. Drivers will be forced to turn right and travel north on CO 119 until they reach the turn-around just before the 83rd Street intersection or at the Airport Road intersection.
Please be sure to take note of the closure time and also see the accompanying map for detour information. The CDOT website suggests it would be best to avoid this area altogether during the closure time.
The detour routes for the Niwot Road median closure at CO 119 will be as follows:
• Westbound traffic will head north on CO 119/Diagonal Highway, use 83rd Street or Airport Road to get on southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, and exit onto westbound Niwot Road.
• Eastbound traffic will head south on CO 119/Diagonal Highway, turn left onto Colorado Highway 52, and turn left onto northbound 79th Street to return to eastbound Niwot Road.
TRAIL NEWS
Niwot/Gunbarrel residents may be surprised to find that the area around the new Vesper Trail is now closed until October 31. According to the Boulder Open Space Management and Parks Closures website, "These areas are closed to protect nesting burrowing owls every year from March 15-Oct. 31."
The areas near the Vesper Trail that are affected include:
Cosslett/Knaus Property (north of the East Boulder Trail, south of Lookout Road and east of 75th St.)
Jenik/Cosslett property (north of East Boulder - Gunbarrel Trail, south of Lookout Road)
Jafay/Lynch Property (north of Lookout Road and east of 79th St.)
