The score lines were not pretty, but Niwot soccer stayed spirited through a challenging two-game week at home.
On Tuesday, April 15, the Cougars hosted Fairview High School and were handed a tough 7-0 loss. The Knights struck early, breaking through in the 13th minute and adding two more goals before halftime to take a 3-0 lead. Fairview did not let up in the second half, tacking on goals in the 56th, 59th, 66th, and 75th minutes.
Two days later, the Cougars returned to the pitch for their annual rivalry game against Skyline High School. After back-to-back scoreless draws in the past two years, this one was due for a winner. The Falcons put themselves on the board first with a goal just before halftime, then again in the 57th minute to go up 2-0.
Niwot responded quickly. In the 59th minute, as sophomore Liz Robbins scored her first goal of the season to cut the deficit in half and put the Cougars back in the game. But Skyline answered with a third goal in the 67th minute, securing a 3-1 win.
These losses dropped Niwot to 4-6-1 overall. Still, the team has shown improvement and is aiming to close out the regular season strong with four games remaining.
Next up is a league matchup away against Holy Family High School on Tuesday, April 22, at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers are currently 4-7.
After that, Niwot will host Centaurus High School on Thursday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. The Warriors enter the week with a 4-5 record. Both games offer good opportunities for the Cougars to reset.
